About half a second after I had placed my first £1 chip on red the croupier swiftly removed it and handed it back to me and said that there was a minimum stake on even chances of £10 – oops, not a good start. Not wanting to squander my £20 in one go by placing it on numbers, and not wanting to appear an incompetent fool to the other players by doing something else wrong, I placed my £20 on red. The dealer spun the ball – my heart was pumping and my hands were shaking as I watched that ball spin around the rim of the roulette wheel. The words ‘red, red, red’ were whizzing around in my head just as fast as that ball was spinning around the wheel – when the ball finally did land in red number one (yes, I still even remember the number), I let out a huge whoop, went slightly red and hastily took my chips to the cashier.
O.K so the casino didn’t really go bankrupt paying out my win but it really made me feel as if I had the edge, and on that day I caught the casino bug. Over the years I’ve learnt the rules of most of the games available and now consider myself to be rather experienced in the field. I’ve put my first experience behind me but hey, I’m not embarrassed anymore – we’ve all got to start somewhere haven’t we?
